Beneath the still surface of an Oregon pond, the intimate choreography of rough-skinned newts unfolds—four individuals entwined in a delicate mating embrace, while a third rises from the murky depths, intent on joining the moment. During a spring hike, I paused at this small, unassuming pond, noticing it was alive with the subtle ripples of newts preparing for their breeding season.
