Of all 19 species of North American owls, the Boreal Owl sat near the very top of my bucket list. Secretive, nocturnal, and largely confined to northern forests, it is one of the continent’s most challenging owls to find. When I learned that an irruption year was underway—driven by declining prey populations farther north and pushing some Boreal Owls southward—I quickly booked a last-minute trip to Minnesota in hopes of finding one.

After days of searching snowy forests, I was rewarded with this unforgettable encounter. As light snow drifted through the air, the owl perched calmly on a branch, seemingly unbothered by the winter conditions that define its world. The gentle snowfall and quiet atmosphere perfectly captured what I had always imagined a Boreal Owl encounter would feel like: peaceful, wild, and deeply connected to the northern wilderness.

This photograph represents far more than a sighting. It marks a meaningful step in my goal of photographing every owl species in North America and serves as a reminder of how much wonder still exists in the wild for those willing to seek it.
